WWII period time Royal Navy commander's visor cap grouping attributed to paymaster commander J.R.Cundall (1878-1964) who served on HMS Royal Oak when the ship was attacked by the German U-Boot U-47.
Well worn cap with cloth finished visor showing hand-embroidered oak leaf for admirals. Maker marked to the lining. "J. Cundall" named to the sweat-band. Some moth damage.
In original shipping box addressed to "Rear. Admiral J.R. Cundall".
Visor cap, bullion dress aiguillettes and a pair of uniform spats.
In 1939. HMS Royal Oak was anchored at Scapa Flow when she was torpedoed and sunk by U-47, out of a complement of 1234 men and boys, 833 were killed. The sinking of the Royal Oak was used as a propaganda tool for the Third Reich and made a hero of the U-Boot commander Günther Prien. Cundall continued to serve with the Royal Navy reaching the rank of Rear Admiral.
