The Heimwehr or Heimatschutz was a nationalist, initially paramilitary organization active in the First Austrian Republic from 1920 to 1936. It operated similarly to the Freikorps in Germany in terms of methods, organization, and ideology. The Heimwehr opposed parliamentary democracy, socialism, and Marxism, engaging in various skirmishes against left-wing and foreign groups throughout the 1920s and 1930s. Its regional factions had mixed views on Nazism, with some opposing it and others supporting it. Despite its anti-democratic stance, the Heimwehr established a political wing called the Heimatblock, which aligned with the conservative Christian Social Party. This wing participated in the government of Chancellor Carl Vaugoin in 1930 and in Engelbert Dollfuss' right-wing administration from 1932 to 1934. In 1936, the Heimwehr was absorbed into the only legally permitted political party in Austria at the time, the Fatherland Front, and later became part of the Frontmiliz, a coalition of militia units that joined Austria's armed forces in 1937.
