The Merit Medal for Rescue from Danger was founded by Grand Duke Paul Friedrich August on January 17, 1848, for all those that would attempt to rescue while putting their own life in danger. There are three different coinages. March 25, 1850, to 1865, 1865 to 1912 and 1912 to about 1918. A total of 280 medals were awarded during the whole time of the medal’s existence.
